Venerable Chariton the Confessor and Abbot of Palestine

Saint Chariton the Confessor was born at Iconium in the province of Lycaonia, and suffered there during a persecution against Christians in the reign of Emperor Aurelian (270-275). The example of the holy Protomartyr Thekla (September 24), who was also a native of his city, encouraged him to confess Christ, since he had a great devotion to her.

Saint Chariton bravely denounced the pagan gods and staunchly confessed faith in the one True God, Christ the Savior. The holy Confessor underwent fierce tortures but, by God’s Providence, he survived. The persecution ended after Aurelian’s death in 275. Saint Chariton was among the many Christians who were released from prison, and he resolved to dedicate his entire life to the service of the Lord. Although he escaped death, he grieved because he had not received the crown of martyrdom.

Remember to Keep Up With Your Pledge

The bills are the same in the summer as they are in the winter so please do not fall behind on you pledge.

Support always dips in support but our obligations remain the same. Your consistent support is necessary keep our parish on firm and responsible financial footing.

When You Give to the Good Samaritan Mercy Fund, You Fulfill the Law of Christ

Bear one another's burdens

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ (Galations 6:2)

St. Paul teaches us that God’s law, to love God and neighbor, is fulfilled when we bear one another’s burdens. The Good Samaritan Mercy fund helps us do that by helping parishioners who because of catastrophic circumstances face problems that we can help them with. This year is proving greater than past years so any donation you can make to our fund enables us to carry those burdens of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

All support is local, within our parish. Donations are approved by Fr. Hans and Ron Franklin our Parish Council President. Donations remain confidential.

St. John Chrysostom says those who can give receive their abundance from God in order to give. When we give from our abundance a double blessing occurs — one to the recipient in need, and another to him who gives.

Wisdom From The Elders

Those who cannot be as strict with themselves as some of the saints—nor carry out as strong ascetic practices—can imitate their lives in other ways. They can arouse and establish good dispositions in their hearts, acquire the habit of fervent prayer, wage unrelenting war against thoughts and desires inspired by the passions, protect the purity of their hearts, love silence and solitude, be humble and meek with all people, do good to those who have caused them suffering, and guard themselves against all evil, however insignificant.
Fr. Jack Sparks

In every case the person himself is at fault. Various situations and the devil only serve the cause of sin through temptations; the final decision depends on the person himself, and thus he is wholly responsible. This is evident from the pangs of conscience one feels aften committing a sin. Abbot Nikon Vorobiev

For someone who has love in him, it’s not enough to simply give to anyone who happens to ask for charity; he seeks to find people who have some need in order to support them. Saint Paisios of Mount Athos

The spirits under heaven are always setting traps in our thoughts. When St. Anthony saw all the different kinds of nets that the spirits of evil set in order to ensnare us, he sighed and said, “O my God, who then can be saved?” And he heard a voice: “Only the meek and the humble. What is more, these snares cannot even touch them.” Elder Thaddeus(Strabulovich) of Vitovnica

In order to achieve concentration in prayer, one must humble oneself before God and man, and practice diligently. Without humility a person will always become distracted. Abbot Nikon Vorobiev

Prayer is the flower of gentleness and of freedom from anger. Evagrios the Solitary

EPISTLE

For the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

The Lord will give strength to His people
Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of God, ascribe to the Lord glory and honor.

The Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. (6:1-10)

Brethren, working together with Him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of Godin vain. For He says, “At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day ofsalvation.” Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put noobstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of Godwe commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; withthe weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill reputeand good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known;as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

GOSPEL

For the First Sunday of Luke

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (5:1-11)

At that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. And He saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, Jesus asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at Thy word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish, which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.
