{"id":26687,"date":"2024-04-08T16:19:31","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T16:19:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stpeterorthodoxchurch.com\/?p=26687"},"modified":"2024-04-08T16:19:31","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T16:19:31","slug":"st-peter-news-april-8-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stpeterorthodoxchurch.com\/st-peter-news-april-8-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Peter News April 8, 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Fourth Sunday of Great Lent<br \/>\nSt. John of the Ladder<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Divine Liturgy of St. Basil<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Apostles Aristarchos, Pudens and Trophymos of the Seventy<\/h4>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stpeterorthodoxchurch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/st-john-ladder-500x641-2.png\" alt=\"St. John of the Ladder (Climacus)\" title=\"St. John of the Ladder (Climacus)\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>St. John of the Ladder (Climacus)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Our venerable and God-bearing Father John Climacus (ca. 579 &#8211; 649), also known as John of the Ladder, John Scholasticus, and John Sinaites, was a seventh century monk at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sinaimonastery.com\/\">St. Catherine&#8217;s monastery<\/a> at the base of Mount Sinai.<\/p>\n<p>He came to the monastery and became a novice when he was about 16 years old, and when he died in 649 he was the monastery&#8217;s abbot. He wrote a number of instructive books, the most famous of which is The Ladder of Divine Ascent. (It is because of this book that John is known as &#8220;Climacus,&#8221; which means &#8220;of the ladder&#8221;.)<\/p>\n<p>It describes how to raise one&#8217;s soul to God, as if on a ladder. We support our members through the Good Samaritan Fund, an earmark in our budget to aid parish families through the occasional hard times that come. With the weakening economy and particularly with the high inflation, the needs are increasing and the funds are running low. <\/p>\n<p>We would like to raised $10,000 to $15,000 to replenish the fund. Your gift will remain anonymous (it will be recorded on your year end statement as a charitable donation) as well as those who receive it. <\/p>\n<p>Please contribute a separate check with the notation &#8220;Good Samaritan Fund&#8221; in the memo line. Actually adults are invited too as we can have an adult team as well.<br \/>\nSt. Peter&amp;rsquo;s teens won 2nd place last year at the Parish Life Conference for the Diocese of Miami and the Southeast.<\/p>\n<p>The competition this year will be held in Georgia, near Atlanta over the weekend of June 13-15. All questions for the competition will be from the book of Romans. <\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in studying Romans, whether you want to travel to the conference in Georgia or just study with the team, please contact Diana Najjar at 317-213-5785 or msdiananajjar@gmail.com. There we will find our prayer. There we will find our salvation. <strong>Bishop Irenei Steenberg<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Take care to distinguish between your thoughts, as the Fathers teach. Stop and look, decide which ones are good and which ones are bad. Then, disassociate from any that you find to be bad, believe nothing they tell you, do not believe for an instant that they are a part of who you are.
